Things to Do in Arusha

Arusha National Park packs three landscapes into one compact reserve: the Ngurdoto Crater's forest bowl, the alkaline Momella Lakes, and the slopes of Mount Meru itself. Giraffes, buffalo, warthogs and colobus monkeys are often seen, and flamingoes visit the lakes in season.

It is one of the few Tanzanian parks where ranger-led walking safaris and canoeing are offered — being on foot beneath giraffes changes the scale of everything.

Mount Meru (4,566 m) is Tanzania's second-highest peak and one of Africa's great underrated climbs — a 3–4 day ascent along the crater rim with a ranger, often used to acclimatise before Kilimanjaro. The summit ridge at dawn, with Kilimanjaro floating across the horizon, is unforgettable.

Not climbing? Day walks on the lower slopes and to nearby waterfalls give a taste of the mountain's forests without the altitude.

On the town's western edge, the Cultural Heritage Centre is part gallery, part bazaar — Makonde carvings, paintings, antiques and books, crowned by a spiral gallery building that has become an Arusha landmark.

It is also a place to see tanzanite, the violet-blue gemstone found only in the hills nearby; certified stones are accompanied by certification paperwork.

Arusha's central curio market is stall after stall of beadwork, shukas, carvings and paintings, much of it sold by the makers. Bargaining is expected, unhurried and good-natured — settle in, compare and enjoy the back-and-forth.

It's the easiest cultural hour in town and the best place for souvenirs before flying home.

Arusha sits in coffee country — arabica thrives on Meru's volcanic slopes, and estates around the town open their rows to visitors. Tours walk the planting, picking, pulping and roasting, and end with a cup grown within sight of where you drink it.

Harvest months add the fun of picking; the aroma of the roasting alone justifies the visit.

Lake Duluti is a small volcanic crater lake near Tengeru, ringed by woodland that leans right over the water. Canoes paddle around the rim, passing kingfishers, cormorants, fish eagles and monitor lizards basking on the branches.

A walking trail circles the lake for those who prefer dry land — either way it is Arusha's most peaceful half-day.

Tarangire is the northern circuit's elephant park — large herds moving among ancient baobabs, with the Tarangire River drawing wildlife into view as the dry season deepens. Lions and leopards also live here and are often seen without the crowds of the more famous parks.

At around a two-hour drive from Arusha, it’s the most rewarding day safari from town.

Lake Manyara National Park lies as a green strip between the Rift Valley wall and its soda lake — a groundwater-fed forest teeming with baboons and blue monkeys, hippo pools, elephants and, in season, flamingos on the water.

Its famous tree‑climbing lions are genuine but elusive; spotting them is down to luck rather than a certainty. The park's compact size makes for an easy day trip.

The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the largest intact volcanic calderas on Earth — a walled amphitheatre whose floor holds one of Africa's densest concentrations of wildlife. Lions, elephants, buffalo and hyena are often seen in a single drive; black rhino live here too, sighted with luck and patience.

From Arusha it is a long day — early start, roughly three hours each way — and worth every kilometre of it.

Meserani Snake Park is a long-running roadside institution to the west of town — East African reptiles up close, a Maasai cultural museum explaining life, dress and ceremony, and camel rides for those who want them.

It’s a quirky, easy stop en route to or from the western parks rather than a destination in its own right — and that’s exactly its charm.
