Day Tours from Arusha

Twenty minutes from town, a compact park stretches from the Ngurdoto Crater's forest bowl to the Momella Lakes beneath Mount Meru. Giraffe, buffalo and colobus monkeys are often seen, flamingos visit the lakes in season — and this is one of the few parks offering ranger-led walks and canoeing.

Walking under giraffes before lunch and returning to town for dinner is Arusha's signature day.

About two hours south‑west, Tarangire is the most rewarding single‑day safari from Arusha — elephant herds moving between ancient baobabs, with the river drawing game into the open as the dry season deepens. Lions and leopards live here too, often seen without the crowds of the better known parks.

Leave by seven, take a game drive through the middle of the day, and you will be back for dinner.

Two hours west beneath the Rift wall, Manyara compresses much of Tanzania into a narrow strip: groundwater-fed forest teeming with baboons and blue monkeys, hippo pools, elephants and, in season, flamingos on the soda lake. The famous tree-climbing lions are real and elusive — spotting them is a matter of luck, not a guarantee.

Its compact size makes it the least tiring of the big-park days.

It can be done, and it's worth it: leave Arusha in the dark, descend into one of the Earth's largest intact calderas by mid-morning, and spend hours on a crater floor dense with lions, elephants, buffalo and hyenas — with black rhino possible for those with patience and luck.

Allow roughly three hours' driving each way and go in with your eyes open: this is the longest, and for many the greatest, day on this list.

Towards Moshi, about a two-hour drive from the town, the village of Materuni pairs a walk to a tall waterfall you can swim in on Kilimanjaro's lower slopes with a hands-on coffee session — picking, roasting and tasting the brew with the farmers who grew it.

It’s as much a cultural day as it is a scenic one, and a great way to stretch your legs between safaris.

Out in the dry country towards Moshi, the Kikuletwa hot springs offer startling turquoise water beneath fig trees — warm, clear and deep enough for a proper swim. Weekdays are peaceful; weekends attract local crowds and live music.

Combine it with Materuni for a full 'water day', or relax with a picnic.

Twenty minutes to the east, a forest-ringed crater lake with canoes to paddle and a shoreline trail to walk — kingfishers, fish eagles and monitor lizards for company. There's nothing strenuous about it.

It's the classic first‑morning outing after a long‑haul arrival, or the soft landing after a safari's early starts.

You don't need to summit Meru to feel the mountain: guided day walks climb through farms and forest on its lower slopes to waterfalls pouring off the volcanic rock, with Kilimanjaro on the horizon on clear days.

Expect a few solid hours of uphill walking; the reward is cool spray and views over the whole town.

Tengeru's community tourism programme opens everyday life outside the safari bubble — banana-and-coffee smallholdings, a home‑cooked lunch, and the stories behind both. Back in town, finish at the Maasai craft market with unhurried, good‑natured haggling.

It is the day that makes the rest of a northern‑circuit trip make sense.
