As a day from Nairobi it is a long, rewarding run north past Mount Kenya's shoulder — rhino sightings are among the most reliable anywhere, though never guaranteed.

Solio is a private conservancy tucked between the Aberdares and Mount Kenya, quietly famous as one of Africa's most successful rhino breeding sanctuaries. Both black and white rhino live here, and they are often seen in numbers that startle first-time visitors — grazing in open grassland with the mountains on either horizon.

Meru National Park is Kenya at its wildest and quietest — the country of Elsa the lioness from 'Born Free', all doum palms, swamps and rivers, with elephants, giraffe and buffalo often seen and hardly another vehicle in sight.
