A week to ten days is the sweet spot for Kenya: long enough to combine the Masai Mara with the Rift Valley lakes or Amboseli's elephants, short enough to fit an annual leave entitlement. These are the routes we actually run, with honest notes on driving times, costs and which itinerary suits which traveller.

2.Planning a week in Kenya
Fewer beds, more time spent in the parks
The most common mistake in Kenya itinerary planning is squeezing five parks into seven days. On paper it looks efficient; on the ground it means you spend your holiday watching the inside of a safari van. Kenyan roads reward patience — the Mara is five to six hours from Nairobi, Amboseli four, Samburu five — and every relocation costs you a morning game drive, which is the best game drive of the day.
Our rule: two nights minimum per park, three in the Mara. A week gives you two regions done properly. Ten days gives you three. Anything more ambitious should add bush flights, not more driving.
3.Route One: The Classic South-West Loop (7 Days)
Mara, Nakuru and Naivasha — Kenya's top highlights
Day one runs from Nairobi down the Rift escarpment to Lake Naivasha for an afternoon boat safari among hippos and fish eagles. Day two adds Lake Nakuru — rhino country, with flamingos when water levels allow — before the drive south to the Mara on day three. Then three full days on the plains: morning and evening game drives, a Maasai village visit if you wish, and the option of a dawn hot‑air balloon flight. Day seven returns to Nairobi.
This is the route we recommend to first‑time visitors: maximum wildlife viewing, sensible driving stages, and the Rift lakes give the trip an entirely different landscape. Families with young children often reverse the order, putting the Mara first while energy is highest.
4.Route Two: Northern Circuit (7 days)
Samburu, Aberdare and the wild north
North of Mount Kenya the country dries out, the crowds thin dramatically, and the wildlife changes: Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, beisa oryx, gerenuk and the Somali ostrich — the so‑called Samburu Special Five, none of which you'll see in the Mara. This loop pairs two nights in Samburu National Reserve with the Aberdare Highlands' waterfalls and tree lodges, usually with a stop at the Equator and Ol Pejeta Conservancy's rhino sanctuary.
Choose this route if it's your second Kenyan safari, or if you'd swap some big‑cat density for largely private sightings. Photographers favour the north's light and the doum palms along the Ewaso Nyiro river.

6.Route Three: the 10-Day Grand Loop
Mara, the Rift Lakes and Amboseli in a Single Trip
Ten days lets you add Amboseli — and Amboseli is worth adding. Its marshes hold some of Africa's largest-tusked elephants, and on clear mornings they walk in front of Kilimanjaro's snows for the photograph everyone came for. The loop runs Nairobi → Mara (three nights) → Naivasha or Nakuru (two nights) → Nairobi → Amboseli (two nights) → Nairobi, with day ten free for the Giraffe Centre and the elephant orphanage before an evening flight home.
The Nairobi mid-point matters: it breaks the driving into humane segments and lets you do laundry, which ten-day packers appreciate more than they expect to.

If your budget allows one upgrade, fly one way to the Mara rather than driving both ways. The 45-minute flight replaces a six-hour drive, and you'll be on a game drive by mid-morning on day one.

Can I add the coast to a 7-day itinerary? expand_more
Honestly: not ideal. Seven days split between the safari and Diani means around four hours of each day spent in transit. With ten days, yes — finish the safari on day seven and fly from Wilson to Ukunda for three beach nights.
Do these itineraries work during the wet season? expand_more
The long rains (April-May) bring afternoon downpours but lush, green landscapes, newborn animals and the year's lowest prices. All routes remain open; we simply plan mornings around the weather. November's short rains barely interrupt proceedings.
Are the itineraries private or organised as group tours? expand_more
Both. A private 4x4 with your own guide gives full flexibility; scheduled group departures share the vehicle and cut costs by about a third.
How far ahead should I book for July–October? expand_more
Allow six to nine months to secure the best Mara camps during the migration season. Outside those months, six to eight weeks is usually sufficient.
