Your driver collects you in the dark - typically before 5 a.m. - so the Rift Valley escarpment lightens around you on the way down. With a breakfast stop in Narok, you enter the reserve about midday and the safari begins in earnest: roughly five hours of game drive across the plains, with a picnic lunch inside the park. The Mara's density is what makes a single-day visit viable - big cats, elephant families and vast herds are commonly seen in an afternoon, and between around July and October the migration typically fills the grasslands with wildebeest beyond counting. By late afternoon you head back, reaching Nairobi late in the evening.

Stay at least one night if you can possibly arrange it.
