Your driver picks you up in the dark - typically before 5 a.m. - so the Rift Valley escarpment lightens around you on the way down. With a breakfast stop in Narok, you enter the reserve around midday and the safari begins in earnest: roughly five hours of game drive across the plains, with a picnic lunch inside the park. The Mara's density is what makes the single visit viable - big cats, elephant families and vast herds are commonly seen in an afternoon, and between roughly July and October the migration typically fills the grasslands with wildebeest beyond counting. By late afternoon you head back, reaching Nairobi late in the evening.
