About Fort Jesus

Fort Jesus, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Mombasa, was built by the Portuguese in the 16th century to guard Mombasa's Old Harbour. It stands as a symbol of the struggle for control of the East African coast between the Portuguese, Arab powers and, later, the British. The fort is now a museum presenting artefacts from the coast's rich history, including ceramics, weaponry and trade goods. Its outlook over the Indian Ocean offers spectacular views and a deep insight into Kenya's colonial past.
