2.Why the Mara earns its reputation
Vast skies, big cats, big drama
The Masai Mara National Reserve sits in Kenya's south-west, in Narok County, where the Serengeti ecosystem spills across the border and becomes distinctly Kenyan: about 1,510 square kilometres of rolling short-grass plains broken by the Mara and Talek rivers and flat-topped balanites trees. Because the grass stays short for much of the year and the country is so open, the Mara is one of the easiest places in Africa to actually see wildlife — not just know that it's out there.
That openness is why the Mara built its name on big cats. Lion prides here are large and habituated to vehicles, cheetahs hunt in broad daylight on the open plains, and the riverine forest along the Talek and Mara rivers shelters some of the most photographed leopards on the continent. Even outside migration season, a three-day safari that doesn't produce a lion sighting is genuinely rare.
3.Reserve or conservancy? The most important choice you'll make
Where you stay determines what you can do
The reserve itself is run by Narok County and is open to day visitors, which means the famous sightings — a river crossing, a cheetah on a termite mound — can attract a crowd in peak season. Bordering the reserve to the north is a patchwork of private conservancies (Mara North, Olare Motorogi, Naboisho, Ol Kinyei and others) — community land leased from Maasai families and managed with strict vehicle limits.
Staying inside a conservancy swaps the reserve's iconic river frontage for exclusivity: far fewer vehicles per sighting, plus activities the reserve doesn't permit — night game drives, walking safaris with Maasai guides, and off-road driving at sightings. Your conservancy fee also goes directly to the landowning families, which is why we regard the conservancies as the most meaningful way to visit the Mara.

7.Getting there — how long to stay
Fly to save time, drive to savour the landscape
From Nairobi you have two options. Scheduled bush flights depart Wilson Airport throughout the day and reach the Mara's airstrips in about 45 minutes — the sensible option if you're short on time or combining the Mara with the coast. Driving takes five to six hours along the floor of the Great Rift Valley, and it rewards you with one of Kenya's finest road‑trip views as the escarpment falls away beneath the Nairobi–Narok road.
Three nights is ideal for a first visit: it gives you two full days of game drives plus arrival and departure transfers. Add a fourth night during the migration season — crossings often require patience — or combine the Mara with Lake Nakuru and Naivasha for a week‑long Rift Valley circuit.
