December splits in two: a soft, green first half with shoulder-season prices, then the festive high season — full camps, newborn animals, hot bright days and Kenya at its most celebratory. How to plan for each half.
tips_and_updates Quick facts
From green hush to full celebration
Early December keeps November's secret - green, quiet, kindly priced - while the country strings its lights. Then around the 20th the switch flips: diaspora flights land full, camps set long festive tables, and Kenya throws itself into a fortnight of celebration under hot blue skies. Christmas game drives with champagne breakfasts and New Year sundowners on the plains are their own genre of memory - priced accordingly and booked by August.
Fresh Grass, Fresh Life
The land is at its freshest: short-rains grass draws plains game into postcard-perfect herds, and the southern calving season builds day by day — by late December, Amboseli and the Tsavo plains are bouncing with wobbling newborns and the predators they keep occupied. Birdwatching stays at November's heights, and the first weeks offer the year's most photogenic green-season big-cat backdrops.
