Diani and the South Coast: Kenya's Top Beach Escape

Diani's reef sits a kilometre or so offshore, which turns the sea inside it into a vast, calm lagoon. At high tide you swim in bath-warm turquoise water; at low tide the ocean retreats to reveal sandbars and rock pools you can walk for an hour. Time your days by the tide table — every hotel prints one — and you'll never find the sea 'gone'.

The sand is white coral powder that stays cool underfoot even at noon, and the beach is long enough that a ten-minute stroll gets you past any crowd. Mornings belong to dhow sails and fishermen hauling nets; evenings to some of the most reliable sunsets in Kenya.

An hour south of Diani, the Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park protects the channels around little Wasini Island. The classic day trip runs by traditional dhow: pods of bottlenose dolphins riding the bow wave, snorkelling over coral gardens where turtles graze, and a Swahili seafood lunch on the island — crab, coconut rice and passion fruit beneath a baobab. Try to go on a weekday morning; the sea is calmer and the sandbanks quieter.

The strips of indigenous forest behind the beach hotels are the last strongholds of the Angolan black-and-white colobus on Kenya's coast. Conservation teams in Diani have strung rope 'colobridges' across the beach road so troops can cross without touching the ground — look up at the marked crossings around mid-morning. A guided forest walk brings sightings of bushbabies, Sykes' monkeys and over 250 coastal bird species.

Diani is the best beach in Kenya for tacking on a safari. Tsavo East's southern gates are close enough for a two- or three-day loop — red-stained elephants at the Galana River, lion country along the Yatta Plateau — then you're back on the sand for sundowners. It's the bush-and-beach rhythm at its easiest: no extra flights, one road, two different worlds.
