Kenya is a year-round destination — but the experience shifts dramatically with the seasons. This is an honest month-by-month guide to wildlife, weather, crowds and prices so you can pick dates that suit the safari you want.
1.The Two Rhythms That Determine Everything
Rain and grass set the safari calendar
Kenya's safari year is governed by two rainy seasons: the long rains from around late March to May, and the short rains in November and early December. Between them are two dry spells — June to October, and the warm, bright period from January to early March.
Dry weather concentrates wildlife around rivers and waterholes and keeps the grass low, making animals easier to locate. Rain scatters the game but remakes the landscape: green plains, newborn antelope, spectacular birdlife and the cloudscapes photographers dream of. Neither season is 'better' — they create different safari experiences, and the right month depends on what you're after.

4.Matching months to safaris
Start with the experience, not the date
For the Great Migration: August and September in the Maasai Mara are the classic choice — with the caveat that everyone knows about it. July and October still deliver the herds with somewhat lighter crowds.
For photographers: the green seasons. November–December and March bring storm light, dust-free air, newborns and dramatic skies — at a fraction of peak rates.
For a bush-and-beach honeymoon: January and February. Dependable sun inland and along the Diani coast, warm ocean water, and none of the August crush.
For value: April to early June. You'll avoid some showers and enjoy world-famous parks almost to yourself, at the lowest rates of the year.

If your dates fall in the long rains, head north. Samburu and Laikipia are in the rain shadow of Mount Kenya and stay drier than the Mara — and the reserves are gloriously quiet at that time of year.

No — it's a different safari. Mornings are often clear, storms pass quickly, animals usually remain in the reserves, and prices drop. Only the wettest weeks of April genuinely limit game drives.

December to March is hot and reliably sunny. July–September is cooler with a fresh breeze — excellent after a dusty safari, and popular with kitesurfers in Diani.

Six to twelve months to secure the best Mara camps and availability during the migration season. Last-minute August trips are possible, but choices are limited and prices increase.
