Kenya's safari year is set by two rainy seasons: the long rains from around late March to May, and the short rains in November and early December. Between them come two dry spells — June to October, and the warm, bright window from January to early March.
Dry weather concentrates wildlife around rivers and waterholes and keeps the grass short, which makes animals easier to find. Rain scatters the game but transforms the landscape: green plains, newborn antelope, spectacular birdlife, and cloudscapes photographers dream about. Start with the experience, not the date
For the Great Migration: August and September in the Maasai Mara are the classic choice — with the caveat that everyone knows it. July and October deliver the herds with slightly thinner crowds.
For photographers: the green seasons. November–December and March give you storm light, dust-free air, newborn animals and dramatic skies — at a fraction of peak rates.
For a bush-and-beach honeymoon: January and February. Reliable sun inland and on the Diani coast, warm ocean water, and none of the August crush.
For value: April to early June. You'll dodge some showers, but you'll have world-famous parks nearly to yourself and pay the lowest rates of the year.
