Two lakes, about a two-hour drive apart, with completely different characters: Nakuru's rhino sanctuary and flamingo shallows; Naivasha's hippo-filled waters and islands you can walk to. Together they make Kenya's best short safari from Nairobi.
1.The valley that embraces them both
An escarpment, a string of lakes
Drive north-west out of Nairobi and within an hour the ground falls away: the Great Rift Valley, a trench in the Earth's crust running from the Red Sea to Mozambique, opens below the escarpment road, forming one of Kenya's greatest views. On its floor lies a chain of lakes — and the two most rewarding, Naivasha and Nakuru, sit close enough together to share a weekend.
They divide the work neatly. Nakuru is a fenced-off national park with serious wildlife credentials; Naivasha is freshwater, unfenced and sociable — a place for boat trips, walking safaris and geothermal countryside you can explore by bicycle.
2.Lake Nakuru: the rhino stronghold
Pink Shallows, Armoured Giants
Lake Nakuru National Park gained renown for its flamingos — at times over a million colouring the shallows pink. Rising lake levels have made the spectacle variable (in some years the birds relocate to Bogoria), but the park's quieter achievement is more consistent: it is one of Kenya's most important sanctuaries for both black and white rhinos, protected by a full perimeter fence.
Few parks offer so much within a day's drive: rhinos grazing the lake flats, tree-climbing lions in the yellow-barked acacias, Rothschild's giraffe browsing the euphorbia-clad slopes, and the viewpoint at Baboon Cliff overlooking the whole shimmering basin.
3.Lake Naivasha: at last, out of the vehicle
Boats, Walks and Bikes
Naivasha is where a Kenyan safari lets you stretch your legs. Boat trips thread between hippo pods and beneath fish eagles that swoop for thrown fish; on Crescent Island — a private sanctuary with no predators — you walk unfenced among giraffe, zebra and wildebeest at your own pace, one of the few places in Kenya where that's possible.
Twenty minutes away, Hell's Gate National Park lets you cycle beneath volcanic cliffs where buffalo and zebra graze beside the track, then hike the water-carved gorge that inspired the landscapes of The Lion King. Finish with a warm soak overlooking the steam vents that power Kenya's geothermal stations.
