Diani — repeatedly named among Africa's finest beaches — makes a worthwhile day even if your hotel is on the north coast: about an hour and a half with the ferry crossing, rewarded by that white sand and reef-calmed lagoon.

Go at low tide for the widest beach, and start early; the Likoni ferry queues grow with the morning.

Half an hour north, the ruins of Jumba la Mtwana hold the mosques and tombs of a Swahili town abandoned centuries ago, under baobabs beside the beach. It is a national monument that most visitors miss entirely.
