Diani — repeatedly named among Africa's finest beaches — makes a worthwhile day trip even if your hotel is on the north coast: about an hour and a half including the ferry crossing, rewarded by its white sand and reef‑calmed lagoon.

Visit at low tide for the widest stretch of beach, and set off early; the Likoni ferry queues build up as the morning progresses.

Half an hour north, the ruins of Jumba la Mtwana hold the mosques and tombs of a Swahili town abandoned centuries ago, under baobabs beside the beach. It is a national monument that most visitors miss entirely.
