7 Days Untamed Safari – Samburu, Aberdare, Nakuru & Maasai Mara Circuit

Set off early from Nairobi and travel north through the highlands past Nanyuki, watching Kenya change from green farmland into the rugged, sun‑baked wilderness of Samburu National Reserve — a wilder, quieter corner of the safari map.

After you’ve checked in at your lodge, head out as the heat drops for an evening game drive. From the unique vantage of your lodge, the evening's wildlife viewing comes to you. Watch the forest edge for bushbuck, the secretive leopard and — for the truly fortunate — the rare mountain bongo, one of Africa's most elusive antelope. Optional guided nature walks are offered at select lodges.

Leave the mountains after an early breakfast and descend via Nyahururu, stopping at the famous Thomson's Falls en route, before continuing through the central highlands to Lake Nakuru National Park.

The afternoon game drive circles the alkaline lake that made this park famous — when conditions are right flamingos gather here in numbers, and Nakuru is one of Kenya's most reliable parks for seeing both black and white rhino. Lions, buffalo and the endangered Rothschild's giraffe complete the sightings, and dedicated birdwatching excursions can be arranged on request.

An early breakfast, then westwards across the Rift Valley floor and through Narok, the bustling market town that serves as gateway to the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The roadside scenes — herders with their cattle, busy markets, red-robed Maasai — are a moving portrait of Kenyan life.

You arrive in the afternoon in time for your first drive across the celebrated Mara plains, where big cats and elephants top the bill and the supporting cast numbers in the thousands. Optional Maasai cultural visits can be booked at the lodge for a deeper connection to this storied land.

Today the Maasai Mara is yours from dawn to dusk. The early morning drive chases the reserve's biggest prizes — the Big Five, and in season the Great Migration, when wildebeest and zebra by the hundreds of thousands surge across the plains and, at the right moment, brave the crocodile-patrolled rivers.

Return to the lodge for a freshly prepared lunch, then head out for the afternoon session. An optional hot air balloon ride gives you the Mara from above, and evening sundowners finish the day the classic safari way — a cool drink in hand as the sun sinks into the grass.

Enjoy your last breakfast in the heart of the Maasai Mara — the plains stirring into morning around you — before checking out and setting off on the comfortable drive back across the Rift Valley to Nairobi.
