Day Tours from Diani Beach — Kenya

Forty-five minutes from your sunbed, Shimba Hills lifts coastal rainforest above the beach — Kenya's only wild sable antelope, elephants often seen in the clearings, and the ranger-led walk to Sheldrick Falls for a swim beneath the drop.

It's the easiest wildlife day on the whole coast: morning pickup, back before the pool bar closes.

Diani is the closest resort base for Kenya's finest snorkelling day: down the coast to Shimoni, out by wooden dhow to Kisite-Mpunguti's coral gardens — dolphins are often seen on the way, never guaranteed — then a slow seafood lunch on car-free Wasini Island.

Being nearer than Mombasa means a gentler start and more time in the water.

North via the Likoni ferry, Mombasa rewards a day's history outing from Diani: the UNESCO-listed Fort Jesus in the cool of the morning, followed by Old Town's carved doors, coffee sellers and antique shops at a walking pace.

Start early to beat the ferry queues, and aim to be southbound again before the evening rush.

Safari country starts inland from the coast, and the honest advice from Diani is the same as everywhere on the shore: Tsavo East deserves a night in the park. Red-dusted elephants, the Galana River and huge horizons reward sunrise inside the park, not a same-day runaround.

Diani–Galu is East Africa's kitesurfing capital for a reason: shallow, reef-protected water, wide sandy launch beaches and two reliable wind seasons — roughly December to March and June to September.

Schools on Galu run beginner lessons from a couple of hours to multi-day courses; experienced riders typically head out to catch the afternoon breeze.

At low tide the lagoon opens into sandbanks and shallow reef pools, and glass-bottomed boats turn them into the coast's easiest family outing — starfish and coral heads under your feet, dry hair optional.

South of Diani, Funzi Island day trips trade coral gardens for mangrove creeks — boat rides through the channels, sandbank stops at low tide and a look at island village life, usually with a seafood lunch included.

It is the quieter cousin of the Wasini day, best on a calm morning tide.

The gentlest 'tour' Diani offers: a traditional dhow ghosting along the lagoon as the light turns golden, the beach hotels lighting up behind the palms. Operators run cruises most evenings, weather permitting.
