Three days introduces you to the Mara; five days lets the Mara reveal more. The definitive day-by-day plan — arrival rhythm, two full safari drive days, conservancy and village options — and why day three changes everything.

1.Five-Day Itinerary

tips_and_updates Quick facts

  • calendar_month Day 1: arrive + evening drive · Days 2–3: full-day drives · Day 4: conservancy or village · Day 5: dawn drive + home
  • pets More than ten game drives versus three over a weekend — the odds change completely.
  • wb_twilight Day 3 is the magic: you stop chasing sightings and start witnessing behavior.
  • groups Crowd rhythm: mid-morning is busiest at big sightings; dawn and late afternoon are yours.
  • sync_alt Shorter and longer options — three days for the essentials, or include the Rift Valley lakes.

2.Days One to Three: Arrival and Immersion

The rhythm sets in

Day one is the journey in - the Rift escarpment viewpoint, Narok's chai stop, first zebra on the horizon - landing you in camp for the evening drive that functions as an introduction: here are the plains, here is a lion, sleep now. Days two and three run the classic full rhythm: out at first light when the cats are still working, the long lunch pause while the plains sleep, out again for the golden hours. By the third morning something shifts - you've seen the checklist, so you gain the luxury nobody on a short safari gets: staying with one cheetah family all morning, or letting your guide play a hunch about where the leopard walks at dusk. Guides call day-three guests 'settled'. It shows in the photographs.

3.Days Four and Five: Variations

Build your own second act

The conservancy option moves day four beyond the reserve boundary, where night drives and guided walks are permitted and vehicle numbers are capped - a different legal regime, a quieter Mara. The village option does a Maasai cultural visit properly: unhurried, through your camp's own community relationship rather than a roadside stop. The lakes extension turns five Mara days into a five-day circuit home via Naivasha and Nakuru, stacking flamingos and rhino onto big-cat country. Day five everywhere is the long goodbye - one final dawn drive, brunch, and the road home.

Prefer to skip the drives entirely? Scheduled flights link Nairobi's Wilson Airport with the Mara airstrips daily - we build fly-in versions of this itinerary as tailored quotes around your dates.

Resist the urge to fill day four with a second park. Five days in one ecosystem beats two parks in five days every time - the Mara's value compounds the longer you stay, and the transfer you skip is an extra game drive.

6.Five-Day Mara FAQs

Is five days too long for the Mara? expand_more

No one has ever told us that afterward. The reserve and its conservancies cover far more ground than a week can cover, and the settled calm that arrives on day three is exactly what most people were actually coming for without realizing it.

Can this itinerary run as a fly-in? expand_more

Yes — daily scheduled flights serve the Mara airstrips from Wilson Airport, and we build fly-in versions as tailored quotes. The flight replaces each five-hour drive with under an hour, effectively adding a day of game drives.

When should I book the migration-season version? expand_more

Six to nine months out for July–October, when camps near the river fill first. The rest of the year, a few weeks' notice is usually comfortable.

Reserve or conservancy base? expand_more

With five days, both. The classic split is the reserve side for the river country, then a conservancy for night drives and walks — our Mara conservancies guide covers choosing between them.
