Laikipia and Ol Pejeta: Kenya's conservation heartland

Laikipia was colonial ranching country - vast cattle spreads on the high plains west of Mount Kenya. Over the past four decades those stations have reinvented themselves one by one as wildlife conservancies, and the area has quietly become one of Africa’s notable conservation successes: elephants move along reopened corridors, wild dogs den on former paddocks, and rhinos breed under some of the continent’s most sophisticated protection.

Because this is private and community land rather than a national park, the visitor experience is of a different character: fewer vehicles, flexible rules, and the feeling of being a guest inside a working conservation project rather than a mere spectator at the fence.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy, just outside Nanyuki, concentrates the story. Its black rhino programme is East Africa's largest. Its northern white rhino enclosure holds Najin and Fatu - mother and daughter, the last two of their kind - while scientists race to make IVF calves from preserved genetic material. Meeting them is quietly devastating and utterly unforgettable; travellers routinely rank it above any Big Five sighting of their trip.

The conservancy also shelters Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary - Kenya's only great-ape refuge, housing rescued chimps from across Africa - plus lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and the full northern cast. A day here is a complete safari with a conscience.

Laikipia sits exactly where you want it: on the road north. The classic five-day loop runs Nairobi → Ol Pejeta (one or two nights) → Samburu (two nights) → back via the Aberdare highlands. That sequence stacks three completely different Kenyas — a conservation plateau, semi-desert riverland and a misty tree-lodge forest — into one relaxed week, and every leg is under three hours' driving.
