Lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, rhino — the hunter's old checklist became safari's most famous shorthand. Kenya is one of the few countries where you can realistically see all five in a single week. Here’s exactly where each animal is easiest to find and how to build a genuine Big Five itinerary.

2.Lion: The Mara, Undisputed

Kenya's lion stronghold is the Masai Mara and its conservancies, where large, vehicle-relaxed prides live on grassland short enough that spotting them requires no expertise—you'll often see them on your first morning game drive. The famous river prides hold territories along the Mara and Talek; conservancy prides hunt in view of at most a handful of vehicles.
Elsewhere, Tsavo's maneless males are linked to the lore of man-eaters, and Nairobi National Park—remarkably—sustains wild lions against a skyline of office towers.
3.Leopard: Rivers, Patience, and First Light
The one that finds you
Leopards are common in Kenya and famously good at being invisible. Your best odds hug the riverine forest: the Talek and Mara rivers in the reserve, and the Ewaso Nyiro in Samburu, whose leopards are among the most photographed in Africa. Dawn drives along watercourses, eyes on the horizontal limbs of big fig trees, is the technique; a guide who knows individual animals' territories is the multiplier.
4.Elephant: Amboseli's giants at the foot of the mountain
The most studied herds on Earth
Amboseli is elephant country without rival: research here has followed individual families for five decades, and the swamps draw hundreds of elephants daily across open ground where you can watch entire social dramas unfold - with Kilimanjaro as the backdrop when the dawn is clear. Several of Africa's last great 'super tuskers' carry their hundred-pound ivory here.
Tsavo holds Kenya's largest elephant population overall - red-dusted herds against volcanic hills - and the Sheldrick orphanage in Nairobi completes the story arc for families.
5.Buffalo and rhino: guaranteed sightings and planned encounters
One is everywhere; the other requires a decision.
Buffalo are the freebie: big herds across the Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo and the Aberdare forest edges. The old solitary bulls - 'dagga boys' caked in mud - are the photographers' favorites and the reason buffalo made the dangerous-five list at all.
Rhino is where planning earns its keep. Lake Nakuru's compact sanctuary offers Kenya's most reliable white rhino viewing, often within your first hour. Ol Pejeta adds East Africa's largest black rhino population plus the two last northern whites. Build one of the two into your route and the Big Five stops being a gamble.
