Both are within easy reach of Nairobi and the coast, both are famous for their elephants — yet they’re very different. Here’s a direct comparison of Amboseli and Tsavo: scenery, wildlife, access and which one suits your trip.
1.Two parks, two distinct personalities

Amboseli is compact — about 392 square kilometres at the foot of Kilimanjaro — and it produces the single most famous image in African travel: elephants crossing a dusty lakebed beneath the snows of Africa's highest mountain. Swamps fed by the mountain's meltwater pull huge elephant herds into the open every day, which makes sightings close, reliable and wonderfully photographable.
Tsavo is the opposite: Kenya's largest protected area, with Tsavo East and Tsavo West together covering roughly 22,000 square kilometres of red earth, volcanic hills and doum-palm rivers. It's the park for travellers who measure a safari in horizons — you can drive for an hour and see nobody, then round a bend into a herd of the famous red-dusted elephants at the Galana River.

Beyond the elephants
Amboseli's swamps contain hippo, buffalo and an impressive bird list — over 400 species, from flamingos on the seasonal lake to martial eagles. Observation Hill gives the one vantage in Kenya where the whole park lies outstretched beneath the mountain. Lions and hyenas thrive here, and cheetah patrol the drier edges.
Tsavo West responds with Mzima Springs, where fifty million gallons of crystal-clear water surge from the lava fields each day and hippos drift past an underwater viewing chamber. Tsavo East is flatter, hotter and better for big herds along the Galana River and the long red wall of the Yatta Plateau — one of the world's longest lava flows. Both Tsavos support lion, leopard and some of Kenya's best opportunities to spot the smaller, stranger species: fringe-eared oryx, gerenuk on their hind legs to browse, and striped hyena after dark.

For the Kilimanjaro photo, be on a game drive by 6:15am. The mountain usually pulls its cloud cap over by mid-morning — sunrise and the last hour before sunset are your best windows.

5.Or don't choose at all
The Classic Southern Circuit
Amboseli and Tsavo West share a boundary region through the Chyulu Hills, making the two-park combination one of Kenya's most natural road itineraries: Kilimanjaro mornings in Amboseli, then the lava country and springs of Tsavo West, finishing in Tsavo East on the way to the coast. Four days covers it without rushing; five lets you slow down properly. If your trip starts from Mombasa, Diani or Watamu, run it in reverse and finish with the mountain.
