Most safaris begin and end in Nairobi — and most travellers give it less time than it deserves. With a day or two you can watch a rhino against the skyline, feed a giraffe before breakfast and eat some of East Africa's best food. Here’s how to make the most of your stopover.

2.Morning One: Rhino Encounter Before Breakfast
Nairobi National Park
Nothing resets a jet-lagged brain like lion country at dawn with a skyline behind it. Nairobi National Park packs black rhino, lion, buffalo, giraffe and leopard into savannah that begins where the city's southern suburbs finish — the classic photo is a rhino grazing with towers on the horizon. A half-day drive starting at the gate opening at 6am delivers the golden hours and returns you to the hotel in time for brunch.
3.Second morning: the gentlest hours in Kenya
Elephants, Giraffes and a Famous Farmhouse
West of the city in Karen, two conservation icons sit minutes apart. The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust's elephant orphanage opens for one public hour — orphaned calves tumbling into their mud bath while keepers tell each rescue story. Up the road, the Giraffe Centre lets you feed endangered Rothschild's giraffe from a raised platform, eye to enormous eye.
Round out the morning at the Karen Blixen Museum, the farmhouse at the foot of the Ngong Hills where Out of Africa was lived before it was written, then lunch in one of Karen's garden restaurants.
4.Afternoons and evenings
Markets, Makers and Nyama Choma
Spend an afternoon on Nairobi's craft scene — Maasai markets rotate through the week for beadwork and fabrics (bargain enthusiastically, it's expected), while Kazuri's workshop in Karen sells ceramics made by a women's cooperative you can visit. Utamaduni and the Village Market offer calmer fixed-price browsing.
For dinner, do as Nairobi does: nyama choma — flame-grilled meat with kachumbari salad — somewhere lively, or book one of the modern Kenyan kitchens reinventing coastal Swahili flavours in the upmarket area. Finish with a Kenyan single-origin espresso; you're in one of the world's great coffee countries, and the baristas know it.
