May is when the long rains ease: storms space out, the landscape is at peak green, waterfalls are in full flow and prices remain excellent value. The month for travellers who want a lush, lightly visited Kenya.

  • no_crowds Still blissfully quiet all around.

2.May: How It Feels

The world washed clean

May is April with the volume turned down: storms still roll through but with growing gaps of washed, brilliant sunshine. The highlands are at their most theatrical - the Aberdares' falls thunder, Mount Kenya wears fresh snow some mornings - and by the final week the country often previews June's crisp dry-season air. Travellers with flexible dates aim late May and routinely feel they've stolen something.

3.Wildlife in May

Green-season wildlife viewing comes into its own

Game viewing improves week by week as standing water recedes and animals re-anchor to rivers. The Mara’s resident prides hunt against absurdly green backdrops; Laikipia is drying fastest and is delivering the month’s most reliable big-game viewing. Birdlife remains spectacular — resident breeders now present, migrants having headed north.

If you can only be flexible by two weeks all year, spend that flexibility here: from 20 May onwards you’ll often enjoy June weather at May prices — the calendar’s quietest bargain.

6.May FAQs

Is late May really that different to early May? expand_more

Often, yes — the rains' retreat quickens through the month. Early May is similar to April; the final week frequently previews the dry season.

Is the coast worth it in May? expand_more

For kitesurfers, absolutely — the Kusi trade winds arrive. For pure beach lounging, it's safer from June onwards.

Are all camps open in May? expand_more

Most reopen by mid-May after any April closures. Availability is nearly full while prices remain low — a quietly excellent combination.
