The wake-up knock comes at 04:00 and feels like a mistake. It isn't. You drive through the dark to the launch site, where the envelope lies stretched across the grass, fans roaring, burners throwing three-metre flames into the last of the night. Boarding happens with the basket on its side; you lie back in your compartment, the balloon rights itself with surprising gentleness, and somewhere in that process you leave the ground without quite noticing.
Then: silence, punctured by burner blasts. The Mara unrolls below — pods of hippos in the river's oxbows, hyenas loping home, giraffe throwing hundred-metre shadows. Depending on the wind you'll skim the treetops or climb high enough to see the curve of the escarpment. It is the only way to grasp the Mara's scale — the herds stretch beyond every horizon in migration season — and the hour is consistently the most photographed of our guests' entire trips. Skip it if your budget forces a choice between the balloon and an extra safari day — the extra day wins on wildlife. Skip it too if a 4am start would wreck a travel day, or if back or mobility issues make the landing brace position difficult.
