2.Why the north feels like a different country
Semi-arid, sparse and spectacular
Cross the Laikipia plateau heading north and Kenya changes register. The green highlands drop away into semi-arid plains studded with termite cathedrals, the acacias give way to doum palms, and the light hardens into something photographers chase for the rest of their lives. Samburu National Reserve — with Buffalo Springs across the river — protects the best of this landscape along the Ewaso Nyiro, the brown river that keeps the whole system alive.
Because water is scarce, game viewing has a rhythm the southern parks lack: everything comes to the river. Park yourself near a crossing point in the dry months and elephants, giraffe, buffalo and the cats that follow them will come to you.
3.The Special Five, and why they matter
Five reasons this is Kenya's second-safari heartland
Grevy's zebra is the world's rarest zebra — taller, thin-striped, round-eared — and Samburu-Laikipia holds most of the global population. Reticulated giraffe wear crisp geometric patches that make their southern cousins look faded. The beisa oryx carries rapier horns through the heat haze; the gerenuk stands upright on hind legs to browse where other antelope can't reach; and the Somali ostrich shows off indigo-blue legs in breeding season.
Add the north's famous elephants — research here goes back decades — and leopards along the riverine forest, and Samburu delivers a checklist the Mara simply cannot.

5.Building the northern itinerary
Samburu pairs best with the highlands
The classic route gives Samburu two nights and pairs it with the Aberdare highlands — waterfalls, moorland and night-time wildlife viewing at a tree lodge — with an equator stop and, on longer variants, Ol Pejeta Conservancy's rhino sanctuary at Nanyuki. Four days covers Samburu and Aberdare; five adds the rhinos properly; seven folds in Lake Nakuru on the way home for a full northern-plus-Rift sweep.

Carry a light fleece anyway. Everyone packs for Samburu's heat and forgets the Aberdare leg sits above 2,000 metres - tree-lodge nights up there are genuinely cold.

Is Samburu good for a first safari? expand_more
It works, but we usually send first-timers to the Mara for big-cat density and save Samburu for trip two. If crowds bother you more than a shorter checklist, reverse that advice.
Are there lions and leopards? expand_more
Yes - healthy lion prides and excellent leopard viewing along the river, plus cheetah on the open flats. Density is lower than the Mara, sightings more private.
Can I see rhino in Samburu? expand_more
Not in the reserve itself. Pair it with Ol Pejeta Conservancy, home to a major black rhino sanctuary and the last two northern white rhinos on Earth.
