The Mara wins on density and access. Nowhere else do big cats live at this concentration within an hour of an international-standard airstrip. A three-day trip delivers a complete safari - which is why the Mara owns the short-break and first-timer market. Its conservancy belt adds night drives, walking and vehicle caps the Serengeti's public areas can't offer.
The Serengeti wins on scale and solitude. Drive south from Seronera for two hours and you can lose every other vehicle in an ocean of grass. The calving season at Ndutu - 8,000 wildebeest born daily with cheetahs in attendance - has no Kenyan equivalent. For the feeling of an unfenced planet, the Serengeti's remote corners are unmatched.
