Trade the savannah for the cloud forest
Nothing else on the circuit feels like the Aberdares. The road climbs out of ranchland into bamboo tunnels and moss-hung forest, mist pours over the moorland after noon, and the wildlife watching flips from scanning horizons to reading shadows between trees. Elephant and buffalo materialise out of vegetation at absurdly close range; bushbuck, giant forest hogs and troops of colobus own the clearings; and the park carries Kenya's most reliable rumours of melanistic leopard - the fabled black panther of the highlands.
Higher still, the moorland opens into a Scotland-with-lobelias dreamscape of tumbling streams, trout pools and waterfalls - Karuru's triple drop being the showpiece.
3.The tree-lodge night watch
Safari that comes to you
The Aberdares invented a genre: lodges built on stilts over floodlit waterholes and salt licks, where the game viewing happens after dinner, from armchairs and balconies. Elephants arrive glowing under the lights, hyenas skirt the shadows, genets patrol the railings - and a buzzer system wakes you for the special visits (one buzz for elephant, more for the rarities). It's wildlife watching as theatre, weatherproof and effortless, and children adore it.
The formula earned its legend in 1952, when a young Princess Elizabeth climbed into Treetops as heir and came down, unknowingly, as Queen - the night watch has traded on the story ever since.
